Bio
Sabyasachi Mukherjee is the founder and creative head of Sabyasachi. Mukherjee grew up in the old French colony of Chandannagar in West Bengal, before moving to Calcutta in the mid-1980s. The culture and history of Bengal and Calcutta, remain essential to his aesthetic, design and vision. He graduated from the National Institute of Fashion Technology in 1999 and set up his eponymous studio the same year with a workforce of three people.
Over the past two decades, Mukherjee has not only created India’s leading luxury design house but has also redefined heritage Indian fashion into a lifestyle firmly rooted in heritage, craftsmanship, art and authenticity.
Over the years he has shown at London, New York and Milan fashion weeks. He was the first Indian designer who, after years of being part of traditional fashion weeks in the country, broke away to launch season-less and fluid collections on Instagram.
A market pioneer, there have been many firsts since he is the first Indian designer and brand to collaborate with H&M, Bergdorf Goodman, Pottery Barn, Thomas Goode and Christian Louboutin. He has also collaborated with Forevermark and Asian Paints. Patrons of the brand include celebrities, royals, intellectuals and achievers. With flagship stores in most major cities across India, he is now looking at launching his stores globally as well.
